Why WebP instead of PNG
PNG is lossless, which is great for screenshots and line art but heavy for photos and detailed graphics. WebP supports both lossless and lossy compression and an alpha channel, so it replaces PNG for transparency at a fraction of the size.
For a UI screenshot or a logo with a transparent background, WebP at Balanced quality is visually identical to the PNG and often half the bytes — a direct win for page load speed.
When to keep the PNG
Very old browsers and some email clients still do not render WebP. For a marketing email or a file a client will open in legacy software, stay with PNG or offer both.
If the image is a tiny icon (under a few KB) the difference is not worth the conversion — PNG is already small enough.
Transparency and colour
Transparency is preserved automatically. If you convert to JPG instead, transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose, because JPG has no alpha channel.
Colour profiles are kept where the browser supports them; for the web, sRGB is assumed and safe.
Questions
Are my images uploaded to convert them?
No. Conversion runs in your browser. Open the Network tab and nothing leaves the page.
Does WebP keep PNG transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel is preserved when converting PNG to WebP.
How much smaller is WebP than PNG?
Typically 25–35% for lossless, and much more for photos converted with lossy WebP at Balanced quality.
Can I convert many PNGs at once?
Yes. Add up to 100 files and download them individually or as a single ZIP.
Will every browser show WebP?
All current browsers do. A few very old clients do not — keep a PNG copy for those cases.
